Foundation
Victory Brass Band was formed in 1980 by Henry Capper, an ex-Royal Navy Bandsman. Henry was absolutely dedicated to the band and it's members and led Victory Brass to achieve many successes over the years.
Royal British Legion Alliance
Shortly after the band was formed a decision was made to form an alliance with the Royal British Legion, giving the band rehearsal facilities and the RBL Portsmouth Branch musical support at many events through the year.
Henry's Victory Brass
Under Henry's direction the band performed many concerts and contested regularly at 3rd and 4th section level winning numerous awards. Henry also taught brass at schools and many children benefited from his wealth of knowledge.
National Lottery Grant
In 1997 Henry was successful in winning a lottery grant, coupled with significant sponsorship from the RBL Portsmouth South Club, the band acquired a band-room, shared use of a new mini-bus, timpani drums and a musical arrangement of "Portsmouth" by Derek Broadbent. Unfortunately Henry passed away the same year before seeing the grant awarded and the project completed.
Bob Nother Years
Following these changes Bob Nother became Musical Director of the band for 4 years and as an Army trained Bandmaster, gave the players valuable musical guidance. Bob resigned in 2002 due to work commitments and temporary help and guidance was provided by Steve Dunster and John Bailey from Cosham Concert Band.
Victory Brass Today
Since January 2003 the band has been under the musical direction of ex-navy musician, Steve Yoxon whose dedication to the band has seen its numbers swell in both players and concerts. The Band's Deputy Conductor is Fran Kelly. The band has also formed a strong friendship with RBL Harwich Brass performing joint concerts in both Harwich and Portsmouth since 2007 and also touring together in the USA in summer 2011.
